1. The Rule of Six (Hierarchy of Editing)

Murch created a "Rule of Six" to guide editing decisions, ordering them from most to least important. If a choice must be made, it should follow this hierarchy:

Emotion (51%): Does the cut serve the emotion of the moment? This is the most crucial element.

Story (23%): Does the cut move the story forward in a meaningful way?.

Rhythm (10%): Does the cut happen at a rhythmic, musical moment?.

Eye-trace (7%): Does the cut respect the location and movement of the audience’s focus in the frame?.

Two-dimensional plane (5%): Does the cut respect the 180-degree rule and screen direction?.

Three-dimensional space (4%): Does the cut respect the physical geography of the set/scene?.
